Workshops
The Scholarship Foundation offers workshops and one-on-one assistance to clarify the processes for securing financial aid for postsecondary education. Free workshops are led by Foundation Student Advisors throughout the year online, at the Foundation offices in St. Louis, and at high schools, community colleges, and organizations throughout the St. Louis region. All workshops are free and open to the public.
Three-part Workshop Series on Financial Aid
The Scholarship Foundation’s three-part workshop series is designed to provide students and families with the necessary information to make informed decisions about college enrollment and affordability.
Part One: In the FAFSA Workshop, part one of The Scholarship Foundation’s three-part workshop series, you will learn the basics of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA: what it is, why it is important, how to complete it accurately, and how to submit it early! This includes understanding the difference between a dependent and independent student; the importance of the Federal Student Aid ID (or StudentAid.gov account); and how to complete the form if you have special circumstances.
Part Two: The second of The Scholarship Foundation’s three-part workshop series, Financial Aid Basics, covers the various types and sources of financial aid, how colleges determine financial need, and comparing borrowing options available to help cover expenses. This workshop emphasizes affordability, and participants will also receive information about how to conduct scholarship searches.
Part Three: In the third and final workshop, Decision-Making: Using Financial Aid Offer Letters to Assess Affordability, participants will learn more about why, and how, to review and compare financial aid packages. In addition, participants will understand what information to evaluate and what follow-up questions to ask, when necessary. Finally, participants will learn what options exist when the gap, or unmet need, is too big, including understanding when to submit a special circumstances appeal.
