Civic Insight is an independent St. Louis–based organization that conducts and provides objective research and analysis designed to spur informed civic dialogue and serve as a catalyst for actionable, innovative solutions. Civic Insight partners with nonprofit, philanthropic, and public-sector institutions to translate complex data into clear, practical insight across issue areas, including housing, economic mobility, education, workforce, and community conditions.
Position Overview
The Research Fellow is a part-time, paid research fellowship designed for current undergraduate students and recent graduates interested in applied research, civic data, and real-world policy questions. Fellows support Civic Insight’s research and project delivery work through structured, hands-on experience under the guidance of senior staff.
This role emphasizes skill-building, exposure to applied research methods, and contribution to real partner-facing work. Research Fellows are expected to produce accurate, well-organized work, follow established research protocols, and engage actively in learning Civic Insight’s research standards and tools.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with data collection from public sources (e.g., Census/ACS, state or local datasets), support basic quantitative analysis such as descriptive statistics and trend identification, conduct literature reviews and background research to inform project context, and assist with qualitative research tasks, including interview note summaries and synthesis of findings.
- Organize and clean datasets following Civic Insight’s established guidance, maintain clear documentation of data sources, assumptions, and research steps, and support quality control efforts by checking accuracy and consistency in data and written materials.
- Support with internal and external reporting efforts, including tables and chart preparation, citation management, and fact checking. Along with incorporating feedback and revisions accurately and on time.
- Participate in team collaboration through regular check-ins and project meetings. Raises questions, challenges, or capacity constraints promptly, and tracks assignment tasks and deadlines across projects while following Civic Insight file management, version control, and collaboration practices.
Qualifications
Required
- Recent graduate or current undergraduate student in a relevant field (e.g., public policy, economics, sociology, political science, data science, geography, or related discipline).
- Strong attention to detail and interest in accurate, well-documented work.
- Clear written communication skills.
- Comfort working with data in Excel or Google Sheets.
- Ability to manage time effectively while balancing academic commitments.
- Willingness to learn and apply feedback.
Preferred
- Prior relevant coursework, internships, or research assistant experience.
- Interest in civic, nonprofit, or public-sector research.
