Colleagues at National College Access Network (NCAN) invited me to speak in a TED-style talk at a conference plenary session in front of more than 1,100 people. Three of us agreed to address this prompt: “Achieving Racial Equity: What Will It Really Take?”
I accepted, with two requirements:
- I would address my comments specifically to the white people in the room.
- My approach would be candid and direct.
A week before the talk, they asked for my “walk up music.” Thanks to Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition” for the energy and the perfect refrain:
When you believe in things,
That you don’t understand,
Then you suffer.
Superstition ain’t the way.
Here is the 14-minute result:
What Will It Really Take to Achieve Equity in College Access and Success?
