For almost 100 years, The Scholarship Foundation has supported St. Louis area students to, through, and beyond college.
The Foundation’s success is rooted in three key areas:
The Scholarship Foundation closes the gap between the total cost of attendance and the family and financial aid resources available to students by providing last-dollar funding for college. In 2018, The Scholarship Foundation awarded almost $5 million to 503 students, including $3.1 million in interest-free loans and $1.6 million in grants. The bedrock of the Foundation’s ongoing sustainability is the interest-free loan program, which generates annual repayments of $2.2 million. These repayments are recycled into new loans, providing ongoing student support.
The Foundation’s student advisors worked with more than 6,000 students and family members in 2018 to ensure that students understood the financial aid system and were able to make sound long-term decisions. Advisors provide support and guidance on admissions policies, financial aid options, enrollment, and student loan repayment. Advisors continue to work with students after they begin attending college to ensure that students have the support they need to persist to graduation.
The Foundation’s advocacy program is built on the premise that those who are most affected by policy decisions are the best leaders and advocates for improving policy. In 2018, 10 student interns participated in an expanded advocacy program incorporating new Deaconess Nursing Fellowships and Equifax Finance Fellowships with the Education Policy Internship. The new program used a cohort model in which all students learned about education, health, and finance policy. After an intensive training process, the students visited with legislators, wrote and distributed policy recommendations and white papers, and led community initiatives as they advocated for better and more equitable policies at the institutional, state, and federal levels.

Designated Scholar Loans (DSLs) are a special type of interest-free loan established in memory or in honor of one or more individuals. DSLs offer an option for communication between the donor and student. Each DSL is awarded by The Scholarship Foundation to a student who has applied for an interest-free loan. Donors may establish a DSL with a gift or pledge of $30,000 or more, payable in full or in five annual installments. For more information about DSLs or any other giving option, please call External Relations Director Karin McElwain-West at 314-725-7990.
If highlighted, the named loan was established or expanded since January 1, 2018.
