These internship opportunities are for current students or recent graduates of The Scholarship Foundation of St. Louis, with preference given, but not limited, to Edward Jones Scholars. This internship program is made possible thanks to participating organizations and ongoing support from Edward Jones.
Urban Entrepreneurship Intern
Host Organization: Small Business Empowerment Center
Internship Description: The Small Business Empowerment Center is a Nonprofit Organization sponsored by the Greater St. Louis Empowerment Zone. It serves as a “one-stop shop” to help urban entrepreneurs start and grow their own businesses.
The SBEC summer internship opportunity is an intensive introduction to the world of St. Louis startups, entrepreneurship, and innovation. Interns will apply insights from their academic experiences to real-world entrepreneurship experiences. Interns will work with SBEC staff to identify 10- 20 low-income individuals who would like to start a business. SBEC micro enterprise coaches will work with selected individuals over 5-6 months to assist with basic business planning and micro enterprise development. Each will be assessed on their entrepreneurial skill set using the SBEC’s Small Business Readiness Assessment. Intern will:
- Participate in and apply knowledge from provided online training modules to assist SBEC micro enterprise coaches in supporting clients with their business plan development.
- Assist SBEC staff in identifying 10 – 20 urban entrepreneurs to start and grow their own business enterprise.
- Conduct market research to support SBEC business coaches in assisting small businesses and micro enterprises.
Preferred Skill/Background:
- Background in business or social work
- Passion for entrepreneurship and innovation
- Flexibility to work a hybrid schedule
- Goal-oriented and highly motivated
Eligibility Criteria: A student who is currently funded or has recently received funding from The Scholarship Foundation of St. Louis in the past year.
Location: Hybrid; Work from home with some on-site activities at TREX, 911 Washington Ave St. Louis, MO 63101
Internship Timeframe: 2-3 months
Compensation: Interns will be compensated at an hourly rate ranging from $20 – $25/ hour based on experience, with the opportunity to earn up to $5,000.

Media Landscape Intern
Host Organization: Shur
Internship Description: Shur is a public benefit corporation deploying a comprehensive financial services platform designed to help millions of professionals with student loans move from debt to wealth. “Shur powered by Edward Jones”, a service that will be free to the thousands of borrowers who live in St. Louis City and County, was launched in 2025.
Shur is seeking an intern for a media outreach project focused on the St. Louis region, as well as the state of Missouri. The intern will conduct a study of local and statewide media outlets, with emphasis placed on identifying platforms that elevate community voices, promote financial capability, and highlight the unique experiences residents in St. Louis City and County are having with student loan management and repayment. Interns will contribute to the development of a media plan and segmented contact list that will be used as part of the launch of “Shur Powered by Edward Jones” – a free-to-borrow platform that in 2025 will help professionals with student loans succeed in their repayment journey and pathway to wealth building. Intern will:
- Develop a 3-5 page media rollout plan to support the launch of “Shur Powered by Edward Jones”.
- Assess and categorize regional media outlets.
- Create a detailed spreadsheet of local and statewide media outlets (print, digital, radio, and television).
- Maintain a list of contact names, emails, and submission guidelines for regional media outlets (As available.)
Preferred Skill/Background:
- Strong research skills
- An interest in communications. (But does not have to be majoring in the field.)
- Strong writer
- Experience with Google Sheets and/or Excel
- Interest in community action

Location: This assignment will be 100% remote

NFCC Intern
Host Organization: National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC)
Internship Description: NFCC is in the early stages of building a multilevel financial literacy tool specifically geared towards low-to-moderate-income individuals who are new to the financial market. The tool would first teach important financial skills before unlocking access to different financial products like checking and savings accounts. The internship will focus on research and early planning to help us design the Minimum Viable Product (MVP) — which means the smallest, simplest version of the marketplace we can build to launch it and start helping people. NFCC would make adjustments to improve the product over time.
By the end of the summer, the intern will complete a requirements document – a clear plan that explains what products should be included at the first two levels of the marketplace, how users will move through it, and what financial skills or training they’ll need at each step. Intern will:
- Research other online financial marketplaces and learn what barriers exist for low-income users.
- Develop a tiered marketplace structure and learning requirements.
- Finalize a document that includes recommended financial products, examples, and ideas for how users should experience the marketplace tool.
Preferred Skill/Background:
- Strong motivation and ability to meet goals
- Experience doing independent research
- Personal experience navigating financial systems without access to wealth (for example: budgeting, banking, applying for loans)
Eligibility Criteria: A student who is currently or has recently received funding from The Scholarship Foundation of St. Louis
Location: Remote or on-site in Washington, DC, depending on the intern’s preference and situation. Funding is not available for relocating.
